Why does fine jewelry tarnish?

The metals used in fine jewelry are generally between 9k and 18k gold, rather than pure 24k gold (which is too soft for practical everyday wear) and has a percentage of other metals to support durability. Exposing these metals to unfavorable conditions such as moisture, perfumes and lotions will cause your jewelry to tarnish. It is important practice frequent cleansing and wiping or your jewelry along with properly storing when not in use.

Why does my gold discolor?

Gold itself does not corrode, but its primary alloys of silver or copper will do so under moist or wet conditions. When someone perspires, fats and fatty acids released can cause corrosion of 14 karat gold, especially when exposed to warmth and air.

How often should you clean fine jewelry?

If using the dish soap method to avoid discoloration and build-up, you want to clean your jewelry every 2 weeks.

Dish Soap Method- Mix one drop of Dawn Dish Soap with warm water in a bowl then allowing your jewelry to sit in the mixture for several minutes to cut through oils and grime. For solid gold jewelry and hard gemstones, follow up with a gentle scrub using a soft-bristle toothbrush.

Jewelry cleaning Solution- You'll need to clean your ring about once a month. This gives you a more thorough cleaning than the dish soap method.

Why is fine jewelry more expensive?

Fine jewelry tends to be more expensive because it's made from relatively scarce materials that hold greater monetary value. Other factors include, rarity, quality, customization, supply and demand.
